Erasmus+ - Working together for Roma Inclusive education

Over recent years, a large number of initiatives have been implemented for promoting the inclusion of Roma children into the education system. Yet, the situation remains challenging as Roma children continue to face difficulties regarding their access to the education system, as well as in their advancement to higher education levels. Cultural differences, discriminations, absenteeism, underdeveloped skills and competences, as well as the limited in-service training of the teaching staff regarding intercultural education, lead often to failures regarding the Roma children’s academic achievements as well as to dropout.

The purpose of the project is to exchange experiences and good practices among the partner organizations regarding the implementation of activities and projects aiming at the promotion of Roma inclusion to the educational system, and in particular tools and/or methods applied at the school environment and achieved positive results. Emphasis is given on how these successful tools and methods were applied / implemented, what was their impact, as well as what worked and what didn’t in the given socioeconomic environment. In this context, a small-scale pilot activity designed in order to test successful tools and methods in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, with the aim to provide the partner organizations with new ideas for promoting Roma inclusive education, as well as complementing and improving existing ones that can further strengthen the efficiency of each partner’s efforts in implementing similar activities, enhancing thus the know-how of the organization and the involved staff….

1st transnational project meeting and study visit, Athens, 21-23 January 2017

The 1st translational project meeting and the first study visit of the project “Working together for Roma inclusive education” held to the 2nd Gymnasio of Agia Varvara on 21-23 January 2017. Representatives of project’s partners and many other stakeholders relative to the field of Roma education in Greece participated in the meeting where they had the opportunity to exchange experience and practices…

Selection criteria and small scale interventions

Following the 1st translational project meeting and the first study visit of the project “Working together for Roma inclusive education” held to the 2nd Gymnasio of Agia Varvara on 21-23 January 2017, each partner selected a small scale intervention to apply in its setting. The methodological aspects of the selection criteria for the best practices were discussed during the translational meeting and then to the monthly virtual project meeting in February 2017…

2nd transnational project meeting, Romania, 27-28 March 2017

Following approximately one month of pilot testing of the small scale interventions in all three countries the second transnational project meeting and study visit took place in Bucharest and Ialomita in Romania in 27 and 28 March 2017. The aim of the study visit was to exchange experience and best practices with organizations and schools related to Roma inclusive education in Romania. 3rd transnational project meeting, Bulgaria, 15-16 May 2017

The 3rd transnational project meeting and study visit of the project took place in Pavlikeni and Veliko Turnovo in Bulgaria on 15-16 May 2017. The aim of the transnational meeting was the exchange of experience and peer learning. The project’s representatives met local organisations and actors related to inclusive education and had the opportunity to extensively discuss on issues related to Roma inclusive education. On the first day of the study visit, partners visited Amalipe Centre for interethnic dialogue and tolerance.

The Office Director of the Centre presented the aim of the Centre, the projects and the actions currently
implemented. As she mentioned, “education is an area in which Amalipe Centre has worked since its
inception”. The activities of the organisation focus on reaching schools, teachers, parents and students across
the country. The Centre implements a variety of activities and programmes on Roma inclusive education. Among them is the programme “Every student will be a winner”. The programme aims at preventing dropout and assuring the retention of Roma students, increasing the number of Roma adults involved in any form of lifelong learning and increasing the percentage of Roma youth who continue their education in secondary and high schools…

Pilot implementation of selected tools, methods and practices for the promotion of Roma inclusive education

The pilot implementation of tools and methods for the promotion of Roma inclusive education was one of the main activities of the project aiming to provide the partner organisations with new ideas and tools for promoting Roma inclusive education and test whether tools and methods that had been used by one of the partner organisations could be applied in localities with different socioeconomic characteristics and achieve similar results…

Final project conference, Agia Varvara, Greece, 11 December 2017

The final conference of the project “Working together for Roma Inclusive Education” was held on 11 December 2017 to the 2nd Gymnasio of Agia Varvara. Representatives of the project’s partners as well as of stakeholders actively engaged in the field of Roma inclusion and in particular in education, participated in the conference and had the opportunity to present and discuss on the project activities and results…

Overview of the project activities and results

The objective of the project was to exchange experience among the partner organizations, which all have experience in the implementation of activities and projects aiming at the promotion of Roma inclusion, including in the inclusion of Roma children in the education. The project facilitated the exchange of experience and good practices between the partner organizations regarding the national developments in Roma inclusion in education, as well as tools and methods which they applied and / or implemented and achieved positive results…
